「Northern Blue」は、秋田で江戸時代に始まった「白岩焼（しらいわやき）」の伝統と技と心を込めて作られる陶製アクセサリーです。
白岩焼の特徴は、海鼠釉（なまこゆう）と呼ばれる青白く表情豊かな色合いの釉薬。
地元産「あきたこまち」のモミの灰を材料にしたこの釉薬と、地元産の赤土とが窯の中で化学変化を起こし、独特の色合いが生まれます。
自然由来の材料のみを用い、窯焚きの小さな変化にも敏感に影響を受けるため、ふたつと同じ発色には焼きあがりません。
白岩焼の青白い海鼠釉と赤い土のコントラストは、まるで秋田の雪どけのころの風景のよう。
この土地に生きる人間にとって冬から春にうつりかわる季節は待ちに待った特別な時間です。
「Northern Blue」はその一瞬を小さな陶器のパーツに映しとりました。
パーツひとつひとつの成形から焼き上げ、金具付け、パッケージングまで、すべてを丁寧に手作りしています。
鮮やかでいて優しい「海鼠釉」の青色はさまざまな色合いの肌、年代、ジェンダーの方にしっとりと馴染みます。
さらに、ゴールドのアクセントを加えたシリーズは金の釉薬を高温で焼きつける「金彩」の技法を用いたもの。

“Northern Blue” is a handmade ceramic accessory brand which embodies the traditions and techniques of Shiraiwa pottery that was founded in Akita during the Edo era.
Shiraiwa pottery is characterized by its bright blue and expressive appearance of a glaze called Namako glaze. This glaze is made with the ashes of the rice husks of the locally-harvested Akitakomachi rice. The pottery’s locally-sourced reddish brown clay undergoes a chemical change in the kiln, producing a unique hue. Using only natural materials, it is sensitive to small changes in kiln firing, so it will never be the same color.
The contrast between the blue and white Namako glaze and the reddish brown clay of the ground is very similar to the scenery of the snowdrift season in Akita. For the people of Akita, the transition from winter to spring is long awaited, and that is why it is a special time of the year. Northern Blue has captured these moments of the season in small ceramic pieces. From molding parts and firing the ceramic parts to attaching the metal fittings and packaging, we carefully handcraft everything.
The bright and gentle blue color of Namako glaze compliments all skin tones, ages, and genders. Also, the series with overglazed gold accents uses the “kinsai” technique, in which gold glaze is fired at high temperature. It will suit special occasions.
